This is really beautiful material from a good source in Malkhan, East Siberia, Russia. The best way to tell rubellite from pink tourmaline is the secondary color on the C-axis. Pink tourmaline is usually pink to dark purplish pink with an orange to peach C-axis. The C-axis is the long axis of the crystal and is always at least a slightly different color than the other two directions. Rubellite is pink to red in all three directions, even though the C-axis may be slightly different from the other two directions. In this stone, we have purplish pink to red, a very pretty combination. There are many different tones in the stone depending on the light.

Believed to have been discovered in the 1500s by Brazilian conquistadors, it wasn’t until the 1800s when scientists discovered that tourmaline was its own sort of mineral. Clarity is an important aspect of tourmaline, as it can actually be as transparent as diamond.
