Moldavite Gemstone: About 15 million years ago, a sizable meteor hit in what is now the Czech Republic. The impact melted the ground and mixed with it sending a shower of molten rock. This rock cooled very fast causing it to crystalize into a natural glass-like mineral, called Moldavite. The rapid freezing of the rock also trapped bubbles of gas, which is evident in all natural moldavite, including this stone.

This beautiful stone is rare, found only in Czechoslovakia, and is named for the area in which it is found, near the Moldau River (called the Vltava in Czech). While scientists differ in theories regarding Moldavite’s origin, nearly all agree its formation coincides with the crash of a large meteorite approximately 14.8 million years ago in what is now the Bohemian plateau.

Moldavite is also known as the Grail Stone, as it is believed to have been the green stone in what is known as the Holy Grail. During the Middle Ages, only those who were considered royalty or the highest nobility, wore jewelry fashioned out of moldavite.

Moldavite’s first formal exhibition took place in Prague in 1891.
