This Mahenge red spinel is top color in a size that is not seen often. Red Spinel is a ruby look alike and many old rubies including a huge one in the British Crown Jewels are actually red spinels. The Mahenge spinel is characterized by the vivid pink flashes that do not occur in other red spinels from Burma.

Spinel crystals are so perfect, in Burma they are said to be nat thwe or “polished by the spirits.”
The famous 14th century Black Prince’s Ruby in the British Imperial Crown is actually a red spinel. It has long been mistaken for ruby by emperors and monarchs. Many of the famous “rubies” of history were actually spinels.
Spinel was made the birthstone for August in 2016, and it is sometimes used to commemorate a 22nd wedding anniversary.
