Nearly all commercial blue topaz is heated, irradiated, or both to create the “London Blue” color commonly seen. But this gem has neither been heated nor irradiated. If this were a small stone it would most likely appear nearly colorless, but in large sizes such as this the color is retained. Cut in a Portuguese oval design with fine clarity this is a must for any collector.

1

The origin of the Topaz gemstone’s name comes from the Sanskrit “tapas” for “fire”.

2

Topaz can be found in all colors of the rainbow. The most valuable color is red and is often referred to as imperial topaz. Less than 1% of all gem quality topazes exhibit this color.

3

One of the most well-known topaz gemstones is a 1680 carat colorless topaz that resides in the Portuguese crown. The gemstone was originally thought to be the largest diamond ever found until its true identity was discovered.

4

Pink topaz was first discovered in 19th century Russia. Since the gemstone was highly coveted, only the Czar, his family, and those he gave it to were allowed to own and wear the gem.

5

Topaz crystal represents the months of November and December and is the birthstone of both the astrological signs of Scorpio and Sagittarius.
